    Osin's Fall 2005

I remember reading a book about Irish Legends and mythology at school some time ago. One particular story from that book, the tale of Osin and Tir Na Nog, enchanted me and I recalled this story when I started composing Osin's Fall.

...Osin was a mortal who fell in love with Niamh the daughter of Manannan, the god of the sea. Osin and Niamh travelled to Tir Na Nog, the Land of Youth, and lived there for over 300 years. Over time Osin yearned to return to his home and eventually persuaded Niamh to let him visit Ireland to see his friends. Niamh told Osin that he could return to visit on the condition that he did not touch Irish soil. On his return to Ireland, Osin discovered that everything had transformed beyond recognition and his friends and everyone he once knew had passed away long ago. On Osin's journey back to Tir Na Nog he discovered some men trying to move a boulder from the ground. From his horse, he moved the rock with a single shunt but fell as the rock dislodged. As he fell to the ground he grew old and his horse ran
away and he could never return to Tir Na Nog!...

This is a rather condensed version of the tale but the underlying themes in the story are clear to see. These themes inspired the piece on an emotional level but I should point out that most of the musical material
derives from dialogue and montage between sounds and recorded improvisations that I made with piano, voice and percussion instruments.

The composition consists of 5 sections entitled Dreaming, Drum Kit, Stutter, Expletive and Abyss that seamlessly evolve from one to the other. Each of these sections does have a clear character and the titles should
evoke something about the mood and musical material.
